Press release - Study at SZTE with virtual mobility at the best universities in the world!

March 26, 2020

Coursera for Campus has signed a cooperation agreement between the University of Szeged and Coursera to support online learning on coronavirus infection. Under the collaboration, SZTE students have free access to about 4,000 courses from the world's best universities and companies.

In order to prevent the spread of the infection caused by the new coronavirus, the University of Szeged switched to remote maintenance on March 23, 2020. Extraordinary online education affects all courses, ie 21,000 students of the university started learning the curriculum online in more than 15,000 courses at SZTE.

Coursera is the world's largest online education platform, founded in 2012 by two Stanford University professors, Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller , to offer MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) materials, which are online courses open to the public anytime, anywhere. . Today, more than 49 million people study in the Coursera system worldwide. Coursera offers more than 3,800 courses from courses in the world’s top 200 universities, as well as training materials from industry players, including Yale University, the University of London, and majors such as Google and IBM.

As of March 23, 2020, 7,500 students at the University of Szeged received access to Coursera materials through the Coursera for Campus. Launched in 2019, Coursera for Campus is a new opportunity for universities to use Coursera materials to provide their students with professionally relevant, multidisciplinary online knowledge. In connection with Coursera's Coronavirus Response Initiative , the University of Szeged was able to increase the number of SZTE students who can use the system free of charge at the same time.

- The COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic affects higher education institutions worldwide, affecting the lives of 1.4 billion students in 156 countries. At this critical juncture, higher education institutions need to work together to move to digital education and support student learning online, said Leah Belsky, CEO of Coursera. "We are pleased to partner with the University of Szeged, which is an excellent example of how to support students in online learning in these difficult times and how to enable students to continue their studies," he added.

Coursera’s courses - which encompass popular university subjects such as engineering, business, IT, health and art - divide the curriculum into weeks and include video lessons and reading lessons. The acquisition of the curriculum can be measured by practice tests and exam tests, and students can also receive an e-diploma at the end of the courses.

These courses complement the current curriculum of the University of Szeged well, and in fact, Coursera also offers courses that are not currently available online at the University of Szeged. Coursera's partners include institutions that have partnered with SZTE through the Association of European Universities, Lund University and Ludwig-Maximilian University offer courses on Coursera.

The University of Szeged has been announcing the field of management and management in the distance education department for 20 years, and more than 700 people have successfully completed the distance learning training of the Faculty of Economics. The development of distance education is a strategic goal defined in the University's Institutional Development Plan. The EFOP 3.4.3 project, which makes the innovative development of educational and service performance in preparation for the challenges of the labor market and international competition, is also closely linked to online education. The project has already produced a number of online curricula that have entered the bloodstream of university education.

- Due to the health emergency, the University of Szeged introduced online education earlier than planned, thanks to the measures taken by Coursera in relation to the coronavirus, and more widely than planned. Thanks to this, the students of the university can also take the Coursera courses of other universities - said Prof. Dr. Klára Gellén, the Vice-Rector for Education of SZTE. - The aim is to provide extensive support for extraordinary distance learning with this excellent opportunity. The medium-term goal of the collaboration is to allow some of the Coursera courses to be integrated into university curricula, he added.
